What should I expect on the exam night? The sleep lab contains state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary monitors and recorders. The two bedroom laboratory at Gulf Coast Medical Center has been renovated to mimic hotel rooms. The privacy of your own room allows you to have the study during the week, clean up, dress and go to work or attend to your normal daily duties. The sleep exam is a totally non-invasive exam, meaning there are no needles or pain. Upon arrival to the lab, a sleep technologist will greet you and explain the exam. The technologist will then attach, with tape, the small electrodes and belts, and settle you into one of the two bedrooms. You then may watch television or read until you fall asleep. During the night the technologist will monitor your brain waves, EKG, muscle activity, breathing, oxygenation, etc. The study is usually completed by 6:00 a.m. The entire study is saved on optical disks for review and interpretation by Dr. Khan. How do I schedule a sleep study? A sleep study, just as all medical procedures performed in the hospital, must be prescribed by a physician. Most physicians are aware of the critical and potentially dangerous effects of sleep disorders. A short office visit will allow your physician to evaluate the need for the prescribed overnight exam. Are sleep studies covered by insurance? Most insurance companies and Medicare recognize the potential long term effects associated with sleep disorders. Because of this, the exam and many of the treatments are covered. To learn if your specific company covers these exams, you may call the Admitting Department at Gulf Coast Medical Center, who will verify your insurance covereage before you come in.
