Radiation therapy is the use of high energy x-rays (external beam) and radioactive implants (brachytherapy) to stop cancer cells from growing and multiplying. It is used alone or together with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Gulf Coast Medical Center employs the use of the following treatment machines:
Linear Accelerator - Provedes high energy x-rays for treatment of deep tumors (cervix, prostrate, and rectum) and six different electron energies, used to treat shallow or superficial lesions (skin, lymph nodes).
